Young Waterloo artist is continuing a family legacy

Waterloo, IA - - - If you ask Lindsey Clement when she first knew she had an artistic ability, it's hard for her to recall.

"I've been an artist ever since I was little. My mom has kept every piece of artwork I've ever made, from preschool until now," Clement said.

Clement has come a long way in nine years. The 12 th grader is perfecting her technique in photography and painting through art classes at Valley Lutheran High School. Although she admits practice makes perfect, Clement attributes the majority of her talent to genetics.

"I think I inherited my artistic abilities from my mom's side of the family," she says, "[My mom's] Dad was an architect, and all three of her brothers can draw extremely well," Clement said.

Whether Clement's talent is the result of her hard work or her great genes, her art teacher Elisabeth Bostic and community members are taking notice. An original acrylic painting by Clement was selected by Bostic to be on display at Veridian Credit Union ® as part of the credit union's ArtShare program. ArtShare is an award-winning program created by Veridian to give artists like Clement exposure in the community.

More than 50 works of art will be unveiled on Monday, February 1 during the ArtShare Premiere. The premiere gives students from Waterloo's East, West, Expo and Valley Lutheran High Schools the opportunity to see their works of art on display and to participate in a professional caliber art gallery premiere. Veridian partners with Heritage Art Gallery to have the works of art professionally framed. The event will include refreshments, a program identifying the artists featured and a map of where to find each work of art on display. Attendees will be able to roam the hallways and take in the artwork just as they would at any other gallery.

"A professional artist can wait a lifetime to see their work of art on display," said Julie VanDaele, who coordinates the event for Veridian. "Allowing these students to experience a genuine art gallery opening at such a young age can make a huge impression on their future in the arts."

The ArtShare Premiere will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Veridian Credit Union, 1827 Ansborough Avenue, in Waterloo. The works of art will continue to be on display through January 2011. The public is invited to the free premiere and to view the pieces anytime during regular business hours.
