Veridian Credit Union partners with Roosevelt Elementary

Students, teachers and administrators of the Council Bluffs Community School District joined Veridian Credit Union staff to celebrate the opening of Roosevelt Money Savers, Council Bluffs' first in-school, student-run credit union.

?The credit union was named by Roosevelt Elementary School students who spent the first half of the school year preparing for the credit union to open with a naming contest, job applications, interviews and more. On Wednesday, at the conclusion of a grand opening and ribbon cutting celebration, Roosevelt Money Savers accepted its first deposits.

“We know that financial literacy plays an important role in future success,” said Veridian Branch Manager Haley Mace. “As a credit union, we want to be a resource for creating those successful futures. It’s a goal we share with the Council Bluffs Community School District, and we’re grateful for their partnership.”

Roosevelt Money Savers will be open in the school every Wednesday morning throughout the school year. The savings accounts will be managed by 10 fifth-grade tellers with assistance from Veridian staff. Students are encouraged to save money for a specific purpose with a reminder that no amount is too small, and prizes are awarded for achieving savings goals. Deposits will remain in the savings account until the student reaches the end of fifth grade. At that time, the student will receive a check for all the money he or she deposited throughout elementary school.

“We are thrilled to partner with Veridian Credit Union at Roosevelt Elementary as our students will learn about and practice saving money as a life-long skill,” Council Bluffs Community School District Superintendent Martha Bruckner said. “I am grateful to the Roosevelt staff members and administration and to Veridian representatives who are making this possible for our students.”
