Who is Lutheran Services in Iowa?
For more than 150 years, Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) has been helping people in need by partnering with children, youth and families, people with disabilities, refugees, and the elderly. By strengthening these individuals and families, LSI advocates dignity and social justice in the community. As one of the largest human services agencies, they employ over 1,000 people, and are nationally accredited by the Council on Accreditation.
What do they do?
LSI began as a safe place for children. in 1864, German Lutherans opened a home for orphans of the Civil War. After relocating, the home became known as Bremwood Lutheran Children's home in Waverly. Today, LSI is still committed to providing safe and permanent homes for children, while also proving support for families, people with disabilities, people with refugee status, the elderly, and many more.
How do they enhance our community?
By helping families in need from a variety of backgrounds, they give a voice to the most vulnerable in our communities. They work to overcome barriers, such as language, income, and education, to help families thrive and be successful.
Why is being an inclusive organization important?
Being inclusive to all individuals is important to overcome perceptions. "We are all unique individuals. It is a basic human right." - Lutheran Services in Iowa
