How to save with comparison shopping
There’s more to consider than just price.

Saving money on big purchases is about so much more than just finding the cheapest option. It’s about finding the most cost-effective option in the long run.
That’s where comparison shopping comes in. Comparison shopping helps you determine the true cost of what you are buying.
Depending on your individual financial situation, sometimes you must go with the cheapest option up front. But when possible, it’s important to strike a balance between saving money now and reducing the cost of ownership later.
Why comparison shopping matters
The price you pay at checkout is just one of the factors you must consider when comparison shopping. You must also consider factors like repair costs, quality and service availability.
If you save money by buying something less durable, you may have to spend more money on repairs later. Or, if service is unavailable for the product you bought, you may have to replace it sooner than you’d like.
A real-world example of comparison shopping
Consider three sets of tires:
- Set A costs $600, lasts for 100,000 miles and comes with a free repair service package.
- Set B costs $400, lasts for 75,000 miles and comes with the free repair service package.
- Set C only costs $200 and lasts 20,000 miles. This set does not include the free repair service package.
If the upfront cost is your only consideration, the choice is easy: Set C. But over your next 100,000 miles, you’ll have to replace those tires four times. That makes the total cost of that set $1,000, which is $400 more than the most durable set. Plus, without the service package, you could end up with additional repair costs.
Plan ahead, save money
There’s no right answer when comparison shopping since everyone’s financial situation is different. Sometimes, the cheapest option may be all you can afford, especially in an emergency.
If you have the chance to plan ahead, comparison shopping can help you save money now and in the future.
