As a Veridian member, you understand the many differences between a credit union and a bank, and how each of those differences are in place to benefit you. Credit unions are not-for-profit cooperatives owned by the people who use our products and services - our members.
You democratically elect an unpaid Board of Directors to make decisions in your interest. That allows your credit union to offer you better rates and fewer fees, returning earnings to you - not to a bank's board of shareholders. In fact, members saved an estimated $40 million in 2020 by using products and services at Veridian rather than at a for-profit bank. That savings also incentivizes banks to keep their rates and fees low, which benefits all consumers and our local economies.
Banks notice the savings you receive from your credit union and recognize it as a loss of potential profit for their shareholders. That's why elected officials routinely hear from bank lobbyists promoting legislation that would weaken or eliminate your access to credit unions - even while banks enjoy consecutive years of record profits.
That's why the Iowa Credit Union League is organizing credit union members in Iowa who are interested in advocating for these shared legislative priorities. Don't let a bank lobbyist speak on your behalf to your representative. As an advocate, you’ll be notified when there’s an increased need for your legislator to hear from you.
