Habitat for Humanity: Making Homeownership Attainable

Affordable and safe housing is a necessity for growing families. Yet, tens of thousands of families are stuck in rental situations they can’t afford. Many of them are living in unsafe conditions.

 

That’s why we’re proud to support Habitat for Humanity in their mission to bring people together to build homes, communities and hope. Together, we want to make the dream of homeownership a reality for low-income families throughout the areas we serve in Iowa and Nebraska.

 

Homeownership can transform lives for individuals and families. It can help free them from instability, stress and fear while encouraging self-reliance and confidence.

Each year, we at Veridian Credit Union support Habitat for Humanity and those applying for homeownership in a variety of ways. We provide more than $2 million per year and volunteer to help build homes with Women Build in the Cedar Valley.

 

Plus, we will match up to $2,000 in deposits for applicants who become Veridian members and open an Individual Development Account (IDA). They can put those funds toward a down payment, closing costs or debt elimination for loan approval.

 

An IDA is a savings account connected to services to help individuals and families eventually acquire an economic asset toward long-term financial stability.

 

One individual, who was connected to us through Habitat, opened a Veridian IDA after previously filing for bankruptcy. She experienced financial hardship despite working long hours and thought the dream of homeownership was impossible.

 

Between her deposits and our matching funds, she was able to start working towards homeownership with Habitat. After going through the foster care system as a child, her goal is to provide a positive space for other foster children today.

 

Our Community Inclusion department can provide additional details about who may qualify for an IDA.

 

Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for the applicant. A Habitat Homeownership Counselor collects all the information we need to open an IDA and secure a mortgage. That way everything is ready to go when we meet with the prospective homeowner.
